The UNESCO National workshop “Intangible Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development in Kazakhstan: Implications for Policy and Programme Development” was held at the National Library in Astana, Kazakhstan on 21-23 November 2016.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the importance of intangible cultural heritage in society and equip individuals working in policy, strategy and project development with the knowledge and skills to make recommendations for integrating intangible heritage safeguarding into policies, strategies and projects for sustainable development (e.g. health, agriculture, education).
Capacity-building workshop brought together officials from the Kazakhstan Ministry of Culture and Sports and Kazakhstan Ministry of Justice, representatives of provincial Cultural Departments, members of the Kazakhstan National Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural heritage, NGOs and bearers.
The organization of this event has benefited from the close collaboration between UNESCO (UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office and Intangible Cultural Heritage Section at UNESCO HQ), the National Commission of Kazakhstan for UNESCO, the Kazakhstan National Committee for Safeguarding of ICH and the National Library of Kazakhstan.
The meeting has called for up to 50 participants including representatives from all over the Kazakhstan, UNESCO and the international experts from India, Iran and Kyrgyzstan who facilitated the workshop.
